Although planted late this year (mid summer from about pencil size young plants previously grown in pots), the leeks are making good progress, and look, at this stage about the same size like last year, when we planted them in their final position much, much earlier.
A friend gave me the advice to heap some compost around the base of the plants. That has seemed to work fantastically well. Not only did they get a boost in growth as a result, but also seem to have longer white stems. Those are plant parts we are after, and which are the most delicious sections of the leeks.
From November to Christmas, or even beyond that, individual plants can be pulled from the ground and then used straight away, as required. I'm quite happy with that.
